Josh Wardell's Pearl Jam .mp3 Archive is a web site devoted to Pearl Jam, its fans, and distributing live recordings around the world in a way that revolutionizes trading of live recordings.

MP3: What is?
.mp3, or MPEG-2 layer 3, is a compressed digital audio formal that allows CD-quality sound to be stored at 1/11 its size. This allows recordings to be stored in a relatively small file that can be transferred easily over the internet and across the planet while never degrading the sound quality. Unfortunately, .mp3s have had a history of hurting the music industry as most sites contain full CDs in .mp3 format. However, this site actually helps the industry as it contains no studio-recorded songs, and in fact provides links to purchase the CDs right off the web.

MP3: How to?
Downloading .mp3s is easy. You can usually click on the link (the song name) to download it, although sometimes you may need to right-click (on PCs) on the name and save the link as an .html document, or (on Macs) just drag the link to where you would like it downloaded. Downloading can take a while over modems and other slower connections as the files are usually a few megabytes. Once the file is downloaded, drag it onto an .mp3 player to hear it. Suggested players are MacAmp and WinAmp. Additional .mp3 information and tools can be found at mp3.com

Texts
Additional files on this site include a songbook of lyrics to 142 of Peal Jam's songs, more lyrics not included in that file, a file listing where recordings are from, and a full listing of files on this site. Please feel free to email me if you have something to add to these files.

Server
This web site is served from my own computer (jwardell.syr.edu) in my dorm room at school. As a result it can go down for various reasons and many times will be turned off at night.

Policies
I have a few basic policies that are strictly enforced. These are in place to allow more to access the information within this archive. These policies are standard web ettiquette and easy to abide by. Violators will be denied access to the server...if this happens to you, please email me immediately. First, keep simultaneous downloads to 4 or less at a time. Second, do not link to any files or directories within the archive from other pages, please only link to the top page (http://jwardell.syr.edu/pjmp3/index.html).

Requests
Requests include any song that I do not have, or a better version of something I do have. If you want to upload something, please email me first. You can upload directly to the site or include the file in an email. If you are making the .mp3 yourself, please be sure it is encoded at 128bps 44.1kHz stereo high quality.

History
The PJMP3A was started in February, 1997, served from my own computer via dorm networking (and still is). It was intended to be something unique from most other .mp3 sites-- one that is devoted to one artist, providing a large collection of rare non-album music. I owe my starting collection to Headcase and Digriz, whose incredible number of files still make up a good part of this archive. The site increased in popularity and size quickly over the next year. In December 1997 the site made national news when I posted clips from Yield before anyone else had ever heard them. The site was redesigned in January 1998 to what it is now.
