Snow is already starting to fall in New England and I will soon be making trips north to go skiing. I barely survived <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jwardell\/sets\/98051\/\">last year&#8217;s blizzard conditions<\/a> driving on the original all-seasons, and I don&#8217;t want to experience that again. I look forward to battling the snow this year with the right tires.<\/p>\n<p>\nMy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jdoqocy.com\/click-1828117-10398365?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tirerack.com%2Ftires%2Ftires.jsp%3FtireMake%3DYokohama%26tireModel%3DAVS%2BES100&#038;cjsku=Yokohama+AVS+ES100+Tire\" target=\"_blank\" onmouseover=\"window.status='http:\/\/www.tirerack.com';return true;\" onmouseout=\"window.status=' ';return true;\" onClick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outgoing\/tirerack');\">Yokohama AVS-ES100&#8217;s<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tqlkg.com\/image-1828117-10398365\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" border=\"0\"\/> served me well for the summer. Several months ago, I bought a slightly used set of MINI R81 7-hole white 15&#8243; rims off of eBay. I then ordered snow tires. I was close to purchasing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tkqlhce.com\/click-1828117-10398365?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tirerack.com%2Ftires%2Ftires.jsp%3FtireMake%3DPirelli%26tireModel%3DWinter%2BCarving&#038;cjsku=Pirelli+Winter+Carving+Tire\" target=\"_blank\" onmouseover=\"window.status='http:\/\/www.tirerack.com';return true;\" onmouseout=\"window.status=' ';return true;\" onClick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outgoing\/tirerack');\">Pirelli Winter Carving tires<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.afcyhf.com\/image-1828117-10398365\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" border=\"0\"\/> for $300, but instead decided to instead get <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.nokiantires.com\/newsite\/tires_popup.cfm?id=1&#038;w=1\">Nokian Hakkapeliitta 2&#8217;s<\/a> for <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.tirefactory.net\/Hakkapeliitta%202.htm\" onClick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outgoing\/tirefactory');\">$400<\/a> which are known to be one of the ultimate snow tires.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThere is quite a difference going from 16 to 15-inch; road noise is much quieter. However, the big snow treads now make a truck-like sound, that I kind of enjoy. Steering is more spongey, and traction of course is not nearly as good as the W-rated Yokos, but the soft rubber&#8217;s traction drops off drastically in low temperatures (as I learned at <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.jwardell.com\/mini\/2005\/10\/22\/end-of-the-autocross-season\/\">last week&#8217;s autocross<\/a>) so even without snow it is a good idea to do the switch to winter tires now.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAfter removing the summer wheels, I cleaned them inside and out, then coated all the rubber with <a HREF=\"http:\/\/store.yahoo.com\/cgi-bin\/clink?autopia+Ea2DUz+303-230330.html+\" onClick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outgoing\/autopia');\">Aerospace 303<\/a> for protection. I then placed them in <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.bavauto.com\/fland.asp?rid=16500\" onClick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outgoing\/bavauto');\">TireTotes<\/a> for storage in my basement, except for one which will go in my <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.njbaglady.com\/\" onClick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outgoing\/baglady');\">Bag Lady wheel bag<\/a> as a spare tire for trips.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week I swapped out my summer tires for my new snow tires.
