Biology (BIO)
Special Note: In addition to any projects listed below, the Department of Biology encourages undergraduates interested in biology to explore possible research opportunities with biology faculty. Interested students should contact the Undergraduate Secretary, Ms. Herholtz, in Room 122 Lyman (x9139) for a copy of the undergraduate research booklet. They can also contact either Dr. Wolf, Chair of the Undergraduate Committee (Room 104D Lyman, x3956) or Dr. Hainsworth, Major Advisor in Biology (Room 11 Lyman Hall, x2155) for details about projects and research areas in the department. This information also can be found from the Biology Department Undergraduate Web Site http://syllabus.syr.edu/bio/courses/courses.htm through the link to About Research Opportunities http://syllabus.syr.edu/bio/courses/research.html.

Maintenance of Cell Fate Decisions in Development and Disease
Project Description: Students will explore epigenetic mechanisms regulating cell fate control using the fruitfly as a model system. Research includes genetic and molecular analyses of critically important genes conserved from flies to humans: where these genes have been implicated in several aggressive forms of cancer that mainly afflict children.
Student Roles/Responsibilities: Students will be expected to familiarize themselves with the literature, plan and execute genetic experiments and assist in the molecular characterization of genes.
Minimum Qualifications: Enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Perseverance, creativity and strong work ethic required. Must be able to work 10-15 hours per week for at least two semesters. Preference given to sophomores and juniors.
