Media, Music and Politics
Project Description #1: the Politics of Pop Music Project - My research expands Mark Mattern’s (Acting in Concert, 1998) theories on how music can serve as political action. During the 2002-2003 school year, I will be concentrating on studying pop music as pragmatic politics. Pragmatic political action occurs when members of one or more communities use music to promote awareness of shared interests and to organize collaborative efforts to address them. In this way, musicians serve as community organizers and/or socio-political problem solvers.

Project Description #2: The Tabloid Presidency - I am conducting research on coverage of the presidency in tabloid and newsmagazines.

Project Description #3: News Narratives - This project is a study of the intersections of the media and public policy. It examines the ways in which dominant policy narratives shape and are shaped by press coverage of public policy. The first case involves an examination of mainstream and African American press coverage of education in in Baltimore, Md. Future research will examine press coverage of health policy narratives.

Student Roles/Responsibilities: Students are expected to partcipate in genearl research. Specific responsibilities are determined by the project assignment and number of credits awarded.
Minimum Qualifications: Students must have interest in the general topic as well as good library research and comptuer skills. Some background in Political Science, Public Policy, Media Studies, Music, or education required. Statistics is recommended, but not required.
